Hiking trails around Búlandsnes

When hiking around Búlandsnes, there are two different routes you can choose from. Both of them begin and end at Bóndavarða. The longer route is approximately 10 km (3 ½ - 4 hours) and the shorter one approximately 5 km (1 ½ - 2 hours).

If you decide to take the shorter route you must turn on Úlfseyjarsund, go from there over to the airstrip, then to Breiðivogur, Fýluvogur and back to where you started.

If you choose the longer route you may have to take a longer cut because when the tide is high Úlfseyjarsund becomes uncrossable. So if you still want to take the longer route you first have to turn near Úlfseyjarsund, go to the airstrip and from there to Úlfsey. At the soutwest end of Úlfsey there is a sign and from there you can choose which way to go first, when visiting the islands Úlfsey, Hvaley and Sandey. Then you go back the same way from the sign in Úlfsey, to the airstrip, then to Breiðivogur and Fýluvogur and back to Bóndavarða.

You can get birdwatching pamphlets with a guiding map at our information centre as well as in Hótel Framtíð.

The charactheristics of Búlandsnes

In the late seventeenth century the islands east of Úlfseyjarsund were all surrounded by sea. Since then they have become part of the mainland, surrounded by sand brought in by the tide and local rivers. Over the last two decades Kalkur and Togl also have met their destiny in the same way.

Fýluvogur is probably the first commercial harbour on Búlandsnes. German merchants received a certificate for trading in Fýluvogur in the year 1589. Today Fýluvogur is only a small lake, far from sea, with no evidence of ocean vessels ever sailing there.

Birds on Búlandsnes

A large portion of the birds nesting in Iceland can be seen on or around Búlandsnes during the migration. The most interesting places for birdwatchers are Breiðivogur and Fýluvogur. Near, and on these two lakes, you can see several species of ducks such as scaup, tufted duck, shoveler and pintail. In this area there are also less common species, for instance savonian grebe, red-throated diver and black-tailed godwit. Lapwing, grey heron and turnstone can also be seen especially in spring and autumn.
The Búlandsnes area is very interesting especially for birdwatchers.
